Bisschop van Rochester: "Multiculturalisme versterkte radicalisering"

“Slachtofferschap in combinatie met de wens om te domineren”, zo vat Michael Nazir-Ali, de Anglicaanse bisschop van het Britse Rochester, de duale mentaliteit samen van veel moslims. In het Verenigd Koninkrijk is met de recente arrestatie van een groep jonge mannen van vooral Pakistaanse afkomst, het debat weer opgelaaid over de oorzaken van radicalisering. Nazir-Ali, zelf uit Pakistan geëmigreerd, legt in zijn artikel Multiculturalism is to blame for perverting young Muslims het verband met de islamitische geschiedenis. Radicalisering is lang voor de westerse interventie in Afghanistan en Irak begonnen en reikt terug tot ver in het vorige millenium:

“Islamic radicalism did not begin with Muslim grievances over Western foreign policy in Iraq or Afghanistan. It has deep roots, going back to the 13th-century reformer Ibn Taimiyya, through Wahhabism to modern ideologues such as Sayyid Qutb in Egypt or Maududi in Pakistan.”

De Britse multiculturele politiek was volgens Nazir-Ali het verkeerde antwoord op diepe gevoelens van frustratie, die veel immigranten met zich meebrachten. Vervreemding, isolement, gettovorming en afkeer van de brede samenleving zijn het gevolg:

“Given the world view that has given rise to such grievances, there can never be sufficient appeasement, and new demands will continue to be made. It is clear, therefore, that the multiculturalism beloved of our political and civic bureaucracies has not only failed to deliver peace, but is the partial cause of the present alienation of so many Muslim young people from the society in which they were born, where they have been educated and where they have lived most of their lives.”
