Tarek Fatah: "Multiculturalisme is wederzijdse afzondering"

Canada’s multiculturalisme: op een bijeenkomst van Iraans-Canadese burgers verschijnen alleen Iraanse en blanke Canadezen, op een bijeenkomst van Tamil Canadezen alleen Tamil en blanke Canadezen et cetera.

De Pakistaans-Canadese televisiemaker, auteur en activist Tarek Fatah kaart de kwestie aan in een artikel Multiculturalism: The Ghettoization of Ethnic minorities (verschenen o.m. op het inmiddels ter ziele gegane webintiatief Muslim Wake Up! – red.).

Waarom nodigen etnische minderheden op hun evenementen naast hun eigen “groep” alleen de “dominante blanke gemeenschap” uit:

^{“This strange relationship of Canada’s ethnics with the dominant community,raises the question: Is this segregation a legacy of our colonial past, the rise of identity poltics, or the direct result of institutional multiculturalism? Why is it that whenever the Chinese or Pakistani or any other ethnic minority organizes events, the only other community invited to participate is the dominant white community?”}

Alleen blanken uitnodigen komt volgens de uit de VS reagerende Syed-Mohsin Naquvi (2 juni 2006) om “impact” te maken op “the ruling elite of the society”. Dan heeft Canada zich in vergelijking met de VS meer “opengesteld”:

The last famous Afro_AMerican who came to the lime-light was Andrew Young. Towards the end he had to resign his post at the UN and take a seat as a private citizen in Atlanta. He is not anywhere near any of the political powerbases. There is only one Asian Senator, named Inoy (of JApanese origin) from Hawaii. I have not heard from him since the Iran-Contra affair back in the 1980’s. The latest rising star from the Afro-American community is Barak Obama. He is not sympathetic to Muslims, Pakistan or Iran. And that is in spite of the fact that a large Afro-AMerican population in the US has converetd to Islam.”}
