Achter de cartooncrisis

De publicatie van een serie cartoons in het Deense massablad Jyllands-Posten leidt sinds september 2005 tot een nog steeds in hevigheid toenemende storm van protesten.

Terwijl beelden van woedende moslims op alle televisiezenders te zien zijn, is de rol van islamitische intellectuelen bij deze uitbarstingen onderbelicht. Ondubbelzinnig ophitsend is bijvoorbeeld de rol van Dr. Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, voorzitter van de International Union for Muslim Scholars (IUMS). Deze geleerde geniet in Europa, met name bij de Londense burgemeester Ken Livingstone, veel gezag. Een boycot van Deense en Noorse producten is volgens Qaradawi “wel het minste” dat vrome moslims en geleerden zouden moeten eisen.

“If the Danish and Norwegian governments make so little of Muslims’ feelings, then boycotting is the least that every Muslim should do, and the least that every da`iyah and scholar should call for in response to the flagrant abuse of depicting the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in such offensive caricatures. We call upon these countries to come to their senses and to offer a proper and clear apology to the international Muslim community.”

De Iraans-Amerikaanse journalist Amir Taheri ontrafelt in de New York Post het proces van opruiing. Ook hij refereert naar de leidende rol van Al-Qaradawi, die een willig oor verschafte aan moslimse afgezanten uit Denemarken:

The emissaries found a more sympathetic audience in Qatar — where the satellite-TV channel Al Jazeera (owned by the emir) specializes in inciting Muslims against the West and democracy in general. The channel’s chief Islamist televangelist, Yussuf al-Qaradawi (an Egyptian preacher who is also a friend of Ken Livingstone, the mayor of London), was all too keen to issue a “fatwa” to light the fuse. He then mobilized his network of Muslim Brotherhood militants in Europe to attack the cartoons and claim, falsely, that images were not allowed in Islam and that the Danish paper had violated “an absolute principle of The Only True Faith.”

De geestelijk leider riep dan ook op vrijdag 3 februari 2006 tot een wereldwijde protestdag van moslims te maken, de Day of Muslim Fury Over Cartoons.
